about

Virtual Ground widens its scope for VG008 with a mind-bending album from the self-taught multimedia and multidisciplinary artistic prodigy Neptunia Monna Anarchus. A 19-year-old non-binary trans woman from Bulgaria [near the black sea]. Through her sonic and visual work, she reflects/refracts complex themes exploring the queer experience and mental health, with her hallucinatory visual style often taking inspiration from nature and the visceral self-expression conjured up by a child's mind.

In ‘The Garden’, Neptunia explores themes of disassociation, loss, derealisation, witchcraft, cultural rejection, and suicidal behavior. Evoking a reflection of the sounds one hears around them, pulverized in a psychological blender. Ambient environmental soundscapes weave amongst sounds akin to dance music, recontextualized into a coherent sonic experience with its own agenda. Unafraid to explore difficult issues, this is a very personal artistic statement that is not concerned to simply entertain.

‘A lot of the album is played on synth patches I made from scratch. On the opening track "Garden Gate" I turned my friends into a choir glitched between dimensions - constantly coming and going further away. The entire album is filled with vocals that are squeaming, screaming, or whispering, with beats not really fit for dancing; instead cluttering your headspace with drums and clattering sounds. In a visual sense the album plays like a surreal and disorienting short movie, not quite meant to be understood but rather to be felt and accepted - the same way we treat our dreams’
